Decking – beautiful and versatile
From dining "al fresco" to topping up your tan.
A deck lets you get the most out of the summer. It looks and feels warm underfoot, is versatile and blends well with many styles of architecture. The surface can be stained or left natural according to the effect you wish to achieve. Decking is absolutely ideal if your garden is uneven or on a slope. It’s great for levelling out awkward spaces, as it’s built on a structure. It can also have split levels and include steps.
Gardens Direct have many years experience in constructing decks and use only high quality materials. We can supply and install softwood, hardwood or composite decking. All decking boards are screwed securely to a substantial framework of wooden treated joists: sizes either 100x50mm or 150x50mm.
Composite decking - The natural choice for a hard wearing and beautiful finish that requires minimal maintenance, It is quickly becoming the largest timber deck alternative on the market. So what is it? And why is it becoming so popular?
Composite decking is a man-made building product made up of mix of wood fibers, plastics and a small amount of bonding agents. This mix is heated, formed into board shaped lengths and then cooled. The resulting boards need far less maintenance than traditional wood decking whilst looking more authentic than plastic alternatives.
What are the benefits of composite wood decking?
Composite has one large benefit over traditional wood decking: it needs far less maintenance.
The plastic content of the material means that the boards become more durable and resistant to rot, damp and insects. The boards never have to be sealed, stained or painted and even in direct sunlight they won't warp or crack. They are splinter free with an additional plastic capping, composite decking boards become stain and fade resistant.
The boards have minimal water absorption which means they are highly slip resistant and can be used around pools and wet areas. Due to the increased durability of the boards composite decking has a much longer lifespan than its wooden ancestors, and most manufacturers offer a 10-25 year guarantee, but we would expect them to last much longer.
Although they might be slightly more costly when you initially purchase them, composite decking continues to look great year after year and has virtually no upkeep costs. In short, composite decking needs far less maintenance than traditional wood decking which means you can spend less time up keeping your space and more time enjoying your garden. That kind of popularity represents a big boost for the environment, too, because most composites are made from waste: sawdust, used plastic milk jugs, and shopping bags. Every 20 feet of decking contains about 30 pounds of material that would have ended up in a landfill. Trex, the first and largest of the composite manufacturers, recycles 6 million pounds of plastic each year.

It is popular to incorporate a pergola over part of the decked area as it can be easily installed at the same time as the deck construction. We can build you a pergola of any size and style.

"Our deck has transformed the garden, now we can walk straight out of the conservatory onto a huge area which is safe for the children too. Alexander and his brother worked until 7.00 p.m every weekday in December to get it finished before Xmas despite the bitter cold and snow! Thanks a lot guys.!"
